Description

I wrote "Clinton" late at night after returning home to Troy, NY from a New York State regional all-day singing held in Clinton, NY. I had the Watts hymn titled "The invitation of the gospel" in mind as I tried to write down the strains of melody in my head that night and decided to set the finished tune to that text.

"Clinton" was published in The Trumpet (volume 2, number 1), and is among three songs of mine included in the fifth edition of The Northern Harmony (2012).

Text

Let every mortal ear attend,
And every heart rejoice;
The trumpet of the gospel sounds
With an inviting voice.

Ho! ye that pant for living streams,
And pine away and die,
Here you may quench your raging thirst
With springs that never dry.
