Spectres no more my soul affright,
I hail the harbinger of light,
The star of Bethlehem points my way,
To regions of unclouded day.
The severing angel but appears,
To wipe away the falling tears,
To execute the great decree,
Which sets the prison’d spirit free.
The hallow’d earth where Jesus laid,
A bed of slumbering rest is made,
And thence–with their victorious head–
His ransom’d people shall be led.
